If you want to learn the art of clay and spin the potter's wheel through the history of the Saxons, just come to the pottery workshop. Local potters will guide you through sgarffito techniques, techniques that local artists are said to have used in the 18th century. You can enjoy a unique experience and, using the necessary tools, make your own traditional cobalt-blue vessel.
Workshops include a short presentation on the history of Saschiz blue pottery, followed by clay preparation instructions and a brief introduction to glaze application and vessel decoration techniques.
The sgraffito technique involves applying two layers of angoba of different colours to a pot, and scratching the top layer so that the bottom layer shows through. Vases made of clay, in their unbaked state, were given a white angoba, after which another blue angoba was applied. After drying the second layer, the decorative pattern would be engraved, so that the white layer underneath would appear on the surface. This would be followed by glazing with a transparent, colourless enamel and firing the vessel.
Other researchers have ruled out the possibility of using this technique and maintain that the theory of the batic technique. With the batic technique the ornaments are drawn with fluid beeswax, heated and covered with a blue glaze. On the parts soaked with beeswax the enamel does not stick, so the decoration remains in the base colour.
The pottery centre has been famous for its blue colour since the 1700s. The aim of the workshop is to bring the production of local traditional pottery back to life, including continuing the training of local young people and building a pottery workshop.
