Embark on a fascinating and spiritual journey in the historical region of Bucovina. The experience consists of a day trip, where you will visit three of the most emblematic UNESCO World Heritage sites in Bucovina (Voronet Monastery, Moldovita Monastery and Sucevita Monastery), as well as the pottery workshop in Marginea, famous for its black pottery.
These monasteries are recognized by UNESCO for their 15th and 16th century frescoes, renowned as magnificent Byzantine art. On this private tour, you will visit Voronet, Humor and Moldovita monasteries, and your guide will give you insightful information about their history.
You will also make a stop in the Marginea Commune to see how black pottery is made by local artisans.
How does the experience work?
The tour starts with a visit to Romania's most famous monastery: Voronet - a UNESCO Nordic Heritage jewel, whose frescoes - with their intense shade of blue - have become world famous. The "Voronet Blue", together with the western fresco depicting the "Last Judgement of Christ", has led to it being renamed the "Sistine Chapel of the East".
Not far from here is the Moldovita Monastery, an architectural masterpiece in Byzantine style. Built by Petru Rares, the prince of the country at that time, the Moldovita Monastery impresses with the complexity of the frescoes on its exterior walls.
Next stop will be the Sucevita Monastery - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 and dominated by a green hue.
The last visit of the day will be to the Marginea Commune, to a famous folk art centre, known especially for the black pottery made here. You will witness the craft of modelling clay, using a technique unique in the world. Afterwards, you will be brought back to Iasi, from where you started.
About monasteries:
Voronet Monastery was built in 1488 in a record time: three months, three weeks and three days, today it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The exterior murals have preserved their nuances despite centuries of weathering. The ingredients used to prepare the paints are still a mystery. The scenes in the murals depict, as in a film, the history of Christianity, presented in an original way, greatly influenced by popular beliefs, Eastern culture and Orthodox thought.
Moldovita Monastery, included in the UNESCO heritage in 1993, was built between 1532 and 1537. For hundreds of years, the murals were the only way for uneducated country dwellers to learn about the teachings of the Bible. The frescoes are a huge colour illustration of biblical scenes, adapted to the history of the place and important moments in the life of the community.
Sucevita Monastery is the newest of the painted monasteries in Bucovina and was included in the UNESCO heritage in 1993. It was built in the Moldavian style, with Gothic and Byzantine influences. The murals are dominated by a shade of green, obtained by an ancient technique using natural pigments.
The tradition of Dacian pottery is continued by a handful of craftsmen who make black pottery using an atypical process. The ceramics made here are famous all over the world, shaped by hand by the craftsmen, fired and then polished by hand. The black colour of the pots is due to the firing process. This is carried out according to an ancient technique, handed down from generation to generation, whose secrets have never left Marginea.
