Give your child a super experience: 3D Origami! 3D Origami (Zhezhi or Golden Venture) is a form of paper folding that leads to the creation of three-dimensional objects by combining several folded units. Unlike traditional origami, which usually uses a single sheet of paper, 3D origami uses many small folded units that are then assembled together to form larger structures. The number of units required depends on the level of complexity and the size of the model. It usually takes at least 100 units to make even the simplest object (scorpion, heart, swan).
Everything in 3D Origami starts with folding a basic unit, often in the form of a small triangle or rectangle. These units are folded from smaller pieces of paper, resulting from cutting a larger sheet or using pre-cut strips. Each unit is folded using a single, simple, repetitive folding technique.
3D Origami allows the creation of an extremely wide range of objects. Unlike classic origami, 3D origami allows much more flexibility and creativity, one can experiment with objects with different colours, patterns and combinations to make unique designs. It also helps to develop spatial thinking and develops the ability to structurally plan the object to be constructed.
Materials needed:
Since folding individual pieces takes time, it is necessary that the basic 3D Origami pieces are already made. The pieces are made at a scale of 1/32 from an A4 sheet of 80g paper, as follows: one A4 sheet is cut (torn) in half, then each of the two halves is cut into two more halves until 32 pieces are made in total.
The minimum number of pieces required is 100 pieces.
About the teacher:
Diana Chirita is passionate about origami and a great admirer of Japanese culture. She likes anime and manga, science fiction and science books. Since 2010, she has been working Origami through various paper folding techniques and other handmade objects, having many interactions with children, both online and offline.
Diana has a huge creative capacity, which she manages to translate into all activities undertaken with the little ones. From decoupage techniques, handmade jewellery, crocheted dolls, painted objects, to origami and astronomy classes, she is a facilitator who wants to gently and passionately pass on some of the things she has learned along the way.
