About fencing:
Fencing is the art of wielding the white weapons. With the proliferation of firearms, fencing lost its military purpose, but the use of the bayonet and the practice of duelling continued in the West until the mid-20th century, and then it became a leisure activity and is a popular sport today. Today it is a combat sport in which the weapons used are the foil, sword and sabre. It has been included in the Olympic programme since the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The International Fencing Federation (abbreviated FIE), to which 145 national associations are currently affiliated, manages the rules of the sport today.
French is the official language used in international competitions. In fencing jargon, players are also called fencers (in French tireurs). They don't play, they shoot. They are not points, but touches (in French touches) or kicks. The blade of the weapon is also called the iron. A fencer who specialises in foil is a foilist; one who specialises in sword is a swordsman and one who specialises in sword is a sabrer. The fight between two fencers is an assault. When the score counts, it is a match. On teams, it is called a match.
A wide range of specific moves (fandom, quick attacking or retreating steps in defence), rapid blows and thrusts from the guard position are performed in a limited space (the length of the board is 14m and the width 1.80-2m).
This requires a special, increased and permanent attention from the fencer, not only on the position and actions of the opponent, but also on the framing, within the limits of this space, the initiation and validity of an attack depending on the spatial parameter.
