In 1980, Mercedes-Benz started work on the new sporty SL line of luxury convertibles.

This car was a further development of the R107 production line. Mercedes-Benz combined style, luxury and the power of a v-8 engine in the 380SL. This model car was very popular in the U.S. The 380SL was so named because of its 3.8-liter, 155-hp V-8 engine, which was designed with emissions control in mind.

The engine was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, and power was sent to the rear wheels. The Mercedes 380SL was a two-seat coupe that cost about $39,000 in 1981. Also in the 380 Series at that time were the 380SEL, which was a four-door five-seat sedan, and the 380SLC which was a two-door four-seat coupe that cost $46,640.

This luxury model enjoyed great popularity among influential people of the time and beyond. It was also used in many movies and TV series, such as: Dallas 1978-1991, Knight Rider 1982-1986, Lovejoy 1986-1994, Clubbed 2007, The Greatest American Hero 1981-1983, Matlock 1986-1995, Acapulco 2021-2022 and many more.

The Mercedes 380SL last rolled off the factory gates in 1985 and was later replaced by the 560SL.
